Moroccan and Spanish artists' works of art are exhibited, from July 22nd to August 19th in the Hassan II Center for International Meetings in Assilah, to pay a posthumous tribute to the Spanish artist Mariano Bertuchi, one of the artisans of Moroccan history of art.
This exhibition of Moroccan and Spanish artists, old pupils of Mariano Bertuchi, reflects the sense of cohabitation of various affinities joined together by a common patrimony. The exhibiting artists are Meki Megara, Martin Prados Foenquinos, Saâd Ben Cheffaj, Joseph Niebla, Ahmed Amrani, Damaso Ruano and Mohammed Melehi.
“Mariano Bertuchi, who devoted his life to safeguarding the urban artistic beauties of Tetuan, deserves to be paid a tribute for the rare work he left behind,” said the Moroccan artist Mohammed Melehi in the presentation of the exhibition.
He added that “Bertuchi did not only reflect the north Moroccan light but also the softness and the serenity of the local people that animate his paintings”.
Author of great pedagogy that served him to give sense and life to the Moroccan popular art in terms of craft industry and fine arts, Bertuchi created two unique institutes in the Arab world: One art crafts school and the school which would become the only national institute of fine arts in Morocco in Tetuan.
Bertuchi had also left his touch on the traditions of his art school that would later become the starting base of many contemporary Moroccan and Spanish artists.
Organised on the occasion of the 27th Moussem of Assilah and within the framework of the seminar “A shared Moroccan-Spanish patrimony, a project for the future”, held in collaboration with the Averroes Committee, this art exhibition is to enrich a debate on Moroccan-Spanish relations. These will be tackled within a series of conferences to be held by the Foundation of Assilah Forum in 8th and 9th august.
The exhibition, which coincides with “Morocco's year in Spain”, will be organized in several cities and centres of Art in Spain during the year 2006.
For its 2005 version, the international and cultural Moussem of Assilah will include many art exhibitions, traditional wall paintings, training courses, a workshop of engravings and children workshops.
Assilah festival (5th to 19th august) is also a place of meeting for the lovers of literature who will be presented this year for the second session of Mohammad Zafzaf Price of the Arab Novel.
During this festival, concerts and music shows of artists and bands coming from Spain, Portugal, Pakistan, Austria, Deutschland, Poland, Italy and Morocco are expected to take place.
